You must maintain a minimum distance of 50 metres from the vehicle in front of you and allow and facilitate overtaking by faster vehicles, stopping if necessary, without forcing drivers of other vehicles to suddenly change their speed or trajectory.
Stopping and parking shall be carried out off the carriageway and hard shoulder.
The pilot vehicle is authorised to use the V-2 signal while providing the service, which must be visible both forwards and backwards and will be disconnected at the end of the service.
Radio and telephone communication must be possible between the personnel of the pilot vehicle and those in the cab of the special vehicle or special transport service, in a language understood by both parties.

Traffic should be suspended when leaving the platform in the event of adverse weather conditions that pose a risk to traffic, or when visibility is less than 150 m, both forwards and backwards.
The owner of the vehicle must ensure, including by travelling the route prior to each journey, that there are no physical limitations or obstacles that would prevent this.
Special vehicles or vehicles under special transport arrangements that exceed five metres in width must be accompanied by law enforcement officers responsible for traffic surveillance. The owner must notify the traffic police officers responsible for traffic surveillance in the province of departure at least 72 hours in advance of the place, time and date of departure for each of the authorised journeys, indicating the registration number of the vehicle or vehicles that will be making the journey and attach a copy of the authorisation. An identical notice shall also be sent to the body designated to receive it by the owner of the vehicle.
4.1.- SPEEDS
a) Vehicle with generic authorisation: the maximum permitted speed will be 70 km/h. Any restrictions listed on the MOT certificate will take precedence over these limitations.
b) Vehicle with specific authorisation: the maximum permitted speed will be 60 km/h. Any restrictions listed on the MOT certificate will take precedence over these limitations.
c) Vehicle with special authorisation: the maximum speed limit shall be that specified in the authorisation, which shall in no case exceed 60 km/h. Any restrictions specified in the MOT certificate shall take precedence over these limitations.
4.2.- TRAFFIC SCHEDULE
- Traffic schedule: any vehicle operating under a special transport regime with a general or specific authorisation may do so both during the day and at night; however, for exceptional transport, it may be permitted between sunset and sunrise when this is stated in the authorisation issued.
- They will not be allowed to circulate on Sundays and national holidays (public holiday in all Autonomous Communities) and regional scope, from eight o'clock in the morning until midnight within the corresponding constituency – national or autonomous community – and on evenings, not Saturdays, of national public holidays, from one o'clock in the afternoon until midnight (This last restriction includes Wednesday, 1 April, the day before Thursday, 2 April, in the autonomous communities where this day is a public holiday).

According to a letter from the DGT dated 26/11/04, which is transcribed below. It is currently possible to drive a vehicle or special transport covered by one, two or more complementary traffic authorisations to carry out a specific itinerary. According to a letter from the DGT dated 26/10/04, regarding the possibility of a taxi acting as a pilot vehicle in special transport, I would like to inform you of the following: The General Vehicle Regulations define a taxi as a passenger vehicle intended for public service, whether or not it is equipped with a taximeter. The aforementioned RGV also requires taxis to be equipped with certain lights and specific signals at all times. Furthermore, Article 66.1.a) of Law 38/92 on Special Taxes establishes that taxis are exempt from special taxes on certain means of transport, based on the service for which they are intended. For all these reasons, and considering also that pilot vehicles accompanying special transport must, in accordance with Annex XI of the RGV, have the V-2 signal installed, after accreditation by the Provincial Traffic Headquarters for the service for which they are intended, which in the case of taxis, THIS DEPARTMENT CONSIDERS THAT A TAXI SHOULD NOT BE AUTHORISED TO PROVIDE PILOT VEHICLE ESCORT SERVICES FOR SPECIAL TRANSPORT.

1. Types of vehicles that require special traffic authorisations (AEC):
Special vehicles: These are vehicles whose technical characteristics permanently exceed the limits established for weights and dimensions in Annex IX of the RGV.
VVehicles under special transport arrangements: These are those which, due to the indivisible load or load assimilated to indivisible that they transport, such as the grouping of similar items and auxiliary crane equipment, permanently exceed the limits established for weights and dimensions in Annex IX of the RGV.
2. Categories of authorisations:
a) Special authorisations for GENERAL traffic or without itinerary. The maximum masses and dimensions established by the APB for these types of authorisations shall be those that do not exceed any of the following dimension and mass limits:

Width ≤ 3,20 m
Height ≤ 4,50 m

b) Special authorisations for SPECIFIC traffic or with itinerary.

• Generic AECs for domestic transport can be requested within 24 hours prior to the transport taking place.
• Specific AECs must be requested at least 48 hours in advance of the scheduled transport date.
• Exceptional AECs must be requested at least one week in advance, depending on the complexity of the transport, and only in person at the WTC SAU.

In Catalunya The same regulations as in Spain apply, but with the following variations:

• Generic or without itinerary, Each application may authorise up to 10 motor vehicles and up to 10 compatible trailers or semi-trailers with the same number of axles, and up to 5 different unit loads when the load is indivisible, and only one unit load when the load is considered indivisible.
• Specific authorisations or authorisations with itinerary, For vehicles used for special transport or special vehicles (except for collection vehicles or agricultural machinery) only for travelling on a specific route (starting and ending within the Catalan interurban road network) and which do not exceed any of the following limits:

2.- Accompaniment by law enforcement officers:
The authorisation decision shall indicate whether, due to the special characteristics of the vehicle or combination of vehicles or due to the limitations of Catalan interurban roads, it is necessary for the Mossos d'Esquadra to accompany the journey.
In general, police escort is always required when special transport vehicles are 5 metres wide or more, or 40 metres long or more (special authorisations). However, for road safety reasons, escort may also be required for vehicles or vehicle combinations with smaller dimensions.
3.- Self-escort:
This scenario is not contemplated.
4.- Empty transport: Spain vs Catalonia:
In Spain, special transports up to 30 m in length may travel without an escort vehicle when they are empty.
In Catalonia, the rule is more restrictive: any special transport exceeding 20.55 m in length must always be accompanied by an escort vehicle, even when it is empty.
11.- Euro-modular vehicles in Spain
In Spain, the regulations on euro-modular combinations (such as duotrailers and megatrucks) have undergone significant changes recently, allowing since October 2025 their circulation with a maximum length of 32 metres and 72 tonnes without the need for prior authorisation in many cases, nor the need for a pilot vehicle.
1.- Technical requirements to be met by euro-modular combinations and their modules
The modules that may form part of a euro-modular combination may be one of the following types of vehicles:
Euro-modular combinations, in order to reach the maximum limits of 72 tonnes and 32 metres in length, must meet one of the following conditions:
✓ More than six axle lines
✓ Be made up of more than two modules
In the case of euro-modular combinations made up of two modules, in order to be considered as such, in addition to having more than six axle lines, they must circulate with maximum total mass and length values, without exceeding the applicable axle load limits, higher than those established for articulated vehicles or road trains, complying in any case with the definition of euro-modular combinations.
The combination and its modules must comply with Article 5 and Annex I of the General Vehicle Regulations, approved by Royal Decree 2822/1998 of 23 December, and must be equipped with:
✓ Air suspension or equivalent on the drive axles.
✓ Mirrors or blind spot detection systems.
✓ Lane departure warning system or lane keeping assist system.
✓ A system capable of automatically detecting an emergency situation and activating the vehicle’s braking system to slow it down in order to avoid or mitigate a collision.
✓ Electronic stability control system.
✓ The motor vehicle must be approved for a maximum combination mass of 72 tonnes. Its vehicle inspection card must state a technically permissible maximum combination mass higher than the laden mass of the combination in operation.
In the event of homologation to a maximum combination mass value below 72 tonnes, that motor vehicle may operate as part of a euro-modular combination provided that the total maximum combination mass is below the corresponding homologation value.
The motor vehicle acting as the towing unit must be equipped with an approved coupling device installed under conditions that guarantee a maximum combination mass equal to or greater than the total mass of the combination being operated, in accordance with the requirements set out in ECE Regulation No. 55.
✓ Both the motor vehicle and category O4 vehicles acting as intermediate units must be towing-capable, and therefore must have suitable electrical, pneumatic and mechanical equipment for towing.
✓ Intermediate O4 category vehicles used must be approved as towing-capable. If they are already registered vehicles without towing capability, this must be legalised through a vehicle modification.
✓ As a general rule, the motor vehicle must have a minimum power of 5 kW per tonne of maximum laden mass of the euro-modular combination. However, this value increases by 1 kW per tonne for operation on sections with gradients and lengths exceeding 5% and 1 kilometre respectively, if the combination exceeds 42 tonnes of total maximum mass. In any case, the owner of the motor vehicle must ensure the vehicle can start on such gradient sections even with wet road surfaces.
